Ideally, you will want to use 3 different colored shirts so that you can mix and match the shirt colors but, if you only have one shirt, you still can make a single-colored tug rope that your pup will love.

Lay a shirt out flat, making sure the front is even with the back. Just under the arm of the shirt, cut a line evenly across from one side to the other. Discard the neck of the shirt.

Using the torso of the shirt, cut off the bottom seam (optional) and measure from the bottom of the shirt to the top and divide by 3. Measure and cut 3 lengthwise strips.

Once this has been done on all of the shirts, mix and match the desired colors and tie the 3 strips together on one end. You can double knot it if you like, for durability. Tightly braid all of the strips of fabric together and knot the end. Pull on the knots on each end to make sure they will hold.

    1. My daughter loves making these! Our dog has tug ropes in a variety of colors now and loves every one of them. I think we’re going to have to start donating them!

  1. I love this! I have two small dogs who love to play fetch and tug-of-war, and their poor “babies” as we call them, get torn open and worn out so fast. And we have a YOOOJ amount of old t-shirts! THANK YOU!

    1. Those types of shirts are perfect for this! I never throw old shirts in the trash. We always make these tug ropes and then give them to friends and relatives for their dogs. It makes a good project for the kids, too.

  2. Great idea for a boredom buster for the kids and dogs this summer! Thanks for sharing at the Creative Ways Link Party! Hope you’ll be back to share more awesome posts.
